Winter Lawnmower Maintenance

Winter is definitely here. It’s well known that the colder months of the year can be harsh on our skin and bodies. In a similar way, winter can also take its toll on your lawnmower. If you don’t take the appropriate steps, your lawnmower may suffer. Whether you’re hanging up your gardening gloves until spring, or you’re going to brave the cold and carry on until Christmas, looking after your lawnmower all year round is essential to ensuring that it lasts as long as possible. In this blog, we take a look at the different ways that you can take care of your lawnmower during these colder months.

Clean Your Lawnmower
Give your lawnmower a good clean down. Clean the blades and all of the other nooks and crannies to remove grass, mud and any other debris that may have gathered on your lawnmower. Cleaning your lawnmower will not only keep it looking great but will also help to prevent any rusting and key parts such as wheels and blades from getting clogged up. It’s important to make sure that your lawnmower is turned off before doing any cleaning and always use a brush or similar to clean the blades, never your hands.

Suitable Storage
In most cases, it’s not necessary to cut your lawn during the winter months as the growth of grass slows during the colder months. For this reason, many gardeners across the country will be putting their lawnmowers into storage. If you are going to store your lawnmower away until after winter then it is very important to store it in a dry sheltered place that is free of damp. Be careful not to store your mower near any gas or electrical products that heat up or may spontaneously combust

Service & Replace Worn Parts
Winter is the perfect time to service your lawnmower and replace any worn parts. We recommend regularly servicing your lawnmower in order to ensure that it is performing its best all year round. By replacing spark plugs, air filters and other key parts after a long year of gardening you are guaranteeing the health of your lawnmower and you’ll be ready to get started once again as soon as spring arrives.

At World of Mowers, we’re the UK’s largest stockist for lawnmower parts. Our wide range of parts will help to keep your lawnmower running for years and years. Shop our parts range today.

Drain or Treat Your Fuel
If you have a petrol lawnmower then it is important to drain your fuel as petrol that is left stagnant for more than 30 days will become stale and degraded. If this enters your engine then it could cause serious damage to your lawnmower, leaving you with an expensive repair bill or in need of a replacement. You can drain the fuel using a siphon hose, or alternatively, you can treat it with a stabilising liquid, these keep fuel fresher for longer, with some claiming to extend the freshness of your fuel by up to two years.
